My name is Aine Divine, I am a portrait artist and art teacher from west Cork in Ireland originally, I now live outside Edinburgh where I teach, create art videos and paint in my garden studio.

I see watercolour as a dramatic and powerful medium, and particularly love to bring this energy portraiture. I featured on BBC's Star Portraits when Mo Mowlam selected my watercolour portrait of her to keep - and reached the final of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the year, lovely having Ian Mckellan as sitter in the final

It's this working from life that inspires me most, and what I most look forward to sharing with you here. I do hope you'll join me for this rare and delightful opportunity - a live hosted painting workshop, I'm certainly excited to deliver it.

Alex Tolstoy is a watercolour artist from Virginia who went astray. Her paintings usually have a germ of reality but then deteriorate into something blurry and abstract where the viewer supplies most of a missing picture. Animals pop in and out of a mist of lost edges, buildings simplify into lines. Perhaps Dr. Tolstoy's previous life as a mathematician was an omen of things to come, she just cannot stay within the lines now!

Alex has won awards, had articles published about her work, given demonstrations, and has been in over 160 exhibitions with over a dozen solo or semi-solo shows since 2013. She is a member of numerous societies, both local and national, and her work is in private and corporate collections (such as the Ritz-Carlton) and is distributed throughout the US, Great Britain, Canada, Japan and the US embassy in Barbados.

Moroccan born Amid El Haddad studied at the school of fine arts in Brussels and it was here that watercolour became his favourite medium for rendering.

Faithful to the tradition of Impressionist painters, Amid is an avid Plein-Air painter, producing the majority of his work outdoors. This has helped, over the years, to develop a narrative and scenographic style, which infuse a characteristic story into each painting.

Amid's current activity as a teacher and a tutor helps him to verbalise and share his craft, helping him to express his feelings more accurately and making his inner voice tangible.

Throughout the years, Amid has developed a relationship of spirituality towards watercolour. He considers the medium not as a tool, but respect and interact with it as a partner with its own pace and life cycle.

A tutor for over 20 years, Barry delights from watching students produce their own exciting works of art and he has  travelled extensively both at home and abroad doing demonstrations, tutoring workshops and painting holidays. Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life.

Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and the film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. His designs were used for the uniforms in the films Valkyrie, The Last King of Scotland, and in particular his ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in The Phantom of the Opera. Carne’s elaborate floral designs for Asprey were included in their first ever catwalk collection and his work was featured on the embroidered cover of the 80th Royal Variety Performance programme in 2008.

Catherine Beale is a painter specialising in super-vibrant, “gravity painted” experimental watercolours!

Catherine's artistic practice began in Singapore in the 1990s which has influenced her use of strong colours. Since her return to the UK in 2006 she has been taken by the Cotswold countryside around her hillside studio - its mists and woods. Catherine's home borders the Heritage City of Bath whose graceful Regency buildings, bridges and canal are another major source of inspiration.

Catherine strives to convey the quality of light with the excitement of “fast and loose" watercolours. New pigments are like ink in their intensity and can be applied onto all sorts of surfaces. By dropping running paint into water, Catherine mingle hues together, encouraging their natural tendency to channel across the surface like rivers and create subtle water marks.

Catherine has been told her demonstrations are friendly, enthusiastic and generous with information. She is an SAA registered tutor and elected member of the Society of Women Artists. Catherine's watercolour portraits have exhibited with the Royal Watercolour Society and Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

Damian is a practising figurative painter based in Edinburgh. He teaches drawing and painting classes for adults and art classes for children at his studio near Haymarket. In the spring and summer he runs landscape painting courses in and around Edinburgh. He is the author of two books, 'Paint Like Degas' and 'Paint Like Renoir'.

Mainly inspired by the wilder landscapes of mountain, Arctic and desert, David paints primarily in watercolour, and much of his work results from expeditions into the remote regions. He has written 20 books illustrated with his paintings and sketches, produced numerous DVDs, and presented his own series on television. David is also deeply concerned about the intense pressures on the countryside from developments, many of which threaten to destroy some of our finest landscapes.

David began his artistic journey studying Chinese Brush Painting in the United States and China.  A decade later, he was introduced to Western style watercolour painting.  Ever since, he has been hooked on watercolour painting, and has become a popular artist and instructor nationally and internationally, as well as a sought-after juror.  David is the recipient of the Skyledge Award (the highest recognition awarded by the Transparent Watercolour Society of America), an award winner and signature member of the American Watercolour Society, signature member of the National Watercolour Society, and his work has earned him numerous “Best of Show” awards, signature memberships, showings in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad, and inclusion in publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, and multiple editions of SPLASH – The Best of Watercolour.

With over 25 years of experience as a public school teacher, he is skilled at breaking down complex concepts and skills into easily learned chunks and now enjoys helping workshop participants find success with watercolour.  As much as he loves to paint, he has found sharing his watercolour passion through instruction even more gratifying and he is most rewarded when he hears a frequent comment: “This is one of the best workshops I’ve ever taken.”

Fabiana is one of our co-hosts, ensuring that her live shows with artists run smoothly - whether in English, Portuguese, Spanish or French.

I am from Brazil, but lived in Portugal during my PhD in Psychology. I now live in Luxembourg and am fascinated by the effects of art on cognition and emotion. For instance, the impact of doing art, listening to music and studying music. I taught in Brazilian and Portuguese universities.

I am a psychologist who loves art, and drawing is really natural for me I do this since I was a child. When I was a teenager, I learned to paint with oil painting, and only about four years ago, I started with watercolour. My story with watercolour started because I used to be a volunteer in a shelter for abandoned dogs and started painting pets to raise money for the shelter, and then I never stopped. I studied botanical illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, and I had tutoring of watercolour with Jem Bowden. Now I am part of some communities that try to bring knowledge about endangered species with art.

Willie Schlechter was born in 1982 in Joubertina, South Africa and attended the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch. In 2004 he received a BA FA (Fine Art) degree and subsequently an MPhil VA (Illustration) degree in 2008. At this time, he started teaching Visual Art and Design at Stellenberg High School in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. At the end of 2016 he resigned in order to focus on his career as a visual artist.

During the course of his studies Willie worked in various mediums and techniques, from painting and printmaking to photography and film. However, his love for painting and realism was most encouraged while doing a watercolour course in botanical illustration by Vicki Thomas as part of his postgraduate studies. Since then he has worked mainly in watercolour within the genre of botanical art, and have received awards at various events, including the Kirstenbosch Botanical biennale, Cape Town (2010 - bronze, 2013 - bronze); World Orchid Conference, Pretoria (2015 - merit) and Botalia, Painted Flora, Lucca (2010 - silver).

In March 2019, Willie had his first botanical art solo at the Woordfees festival in Stellenbosch, titled Uproot. The works explored some of the plants that played a role in (mis)shaping the socio-political and cultural landscape of the Cape.

Willie depicts plants as "portraits". He approaches the subject matter as he does the human figure, with a definite, yet delicate analytical investigation, while at the same time aiming to capture the personality and essence of the plant.

His botanical paintings are digitally reproduced and manufactured into a collection of interior products that include fabrics, scatter cushions, tablecloths, wallpapers, ceramics and art prints. His work is included in the Grootbos Florilegium, and he is a committee member of BAASA (Botanical Artists Association of South Africa).

Willie is currently teaching Visual Art at the PJ Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch.
