CLASS I: GYOTAKU
- Painting on thin rice paper
Broadcast 19 March '24
SUMMARY
Gyotaku comes from an old Japanese method of recording fish catches (perhaps a good idea for your favourite fisherman?).
These days you can use the approach to capture amazing detail beyond just fish sizes, shapes, and textures. Using block paints and thin rice paper we will first show how the fish is painted and then go on to consider other subjects such as ivy leaves (or anything with texture).

CLASS II: WASHI & BLACK
- Painting on handmade (Washi) paper and on black watercolour paper
Broadcasting Tuesday 16 April '24 @ 3:30pm UK time
SUMMARY
Handmade paper is textured and highly absorbent. This makes for interesting, soft results as we shall see.
Black WC paper can result in striking images where the black is contrasted with the white or light colours of the painting. Additionally, metallic and shimmer colours show up really well on the black.
