ABOUT THIS CLASS
In this demonstration, Vanidas will be simplifying the subject reference (a photograph) and will improve it by adjusting the composition, altering elements and adding figures to create a story.
The approach will be loose backgrounds and suggestive details, to create an overall illusion rather than precise narration. In a nutshell, the subject reference will be used as an inspiration, but the painting would be the artist's own narration/interpretation of the subject.
The take away for the participants will be to understand the simplification process, the idea of altering elements to create our own story, as well as certain techniques for painting details with suggestive brushworks.

BUY ART MATERIALS, BOOKS & PRINTS
CLASS RECOMMENDED MATERIALS
1. Watercolour paper and a supporting board OR Watercolour paper block. Around A4 size, would do. I would suggest taking 300 GSM cold pressed, 100% cotton watercolour papers.
2. Watercolour Artist quality paints (Standard Set or individual tubes will do). If using individual tubes, try to include the below.
- Blues - Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean, Cobalt turquoise etc.
- Reds - Crimson/Vermilion etc.
- Yellows - Raw Sienna/Yellow ochre, Gamboge etc.
- Orange
- Green – Sap green/Olive Green
- Violet (optional, nice to have)
- Browns - Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber
- Payne’s grey/Neutral Tint
- White (optional)
3. Brushes: Primarily we will be using a large size, medium size and a small size round brushes with a good tip. As the sizes of brushes vary with brand, I would suggest carrying one big, medium and small size brushes. Big brush may be used for the backgrounds . Carry a liner/rigger brush for details like lines, cables etc.
4. Palette for watercolours – white coloured, with sufficient area for preparing colour mixes and washes
5. Pencil for drawing (preferably 2B).
6. Masking tape to stick the paper on the board (optional).
7. Water container (preferably two containers or one container with partition) for cleaning brush/for washes etc.
8. Sponge, tissue papers, water spray bottle etc.
